So there’s this thing that happens as a christian musician. Because we write songs about Jesus, faith, and walking the christian walk; we get labeled as being unable to break out of “preaching to the choir”. But if we write songs about love and politics; we get slammed for abandoning our faith. A bizarre position to be in.

So balancing what I do to minister to christians and what I do to show the love of Jesus to non-believers is especially important to me. Eight hours a day is spent sleeping. Another eight hours is spent working. So that leaves about eight hours to be a husband, son, brother, father-to-be, friend, mentor, musician, songwriter, discipler and evangelist.

There are those who say that our primary goal should be to learn to love one another and then we can move on to the finer points of biblical understanding. Of course that line of thinking usually leads to christians who spend way too much time at church and who have way too little understanding of God’s will.

I think we can take a lesson from God about healthy spiritual growth through how he has created the physical world to grow. All growth in nature, whether it be plants or animals, is all encompassing. As trees grow tall and wide; their roots dig deep.

Pursuing God is not like studying calculus. The single minded pursuit of any one area of God’s reality leads to a loss of perspective that makes living the christian life nearly impossible.
